BCM Junior League

For some of you – you may remember Central Lancs league club competitions that were interrupted in 2020 just as we started the galas.

A lot has changed, and Central Lancs SWPA no longer exists, but a new affiliation has been set up BCM SWPA and some of the old competitions survive – with some new competition formats.

For 2022 – ORCA have entered three competitions – details are starting to develop for one of these – BCM Junior League (Based on the previous Central Lancs Junior Jubilee)

Details are on the following web page. We have some interesting competitions coming up – this one is a set of 1:1 competitions with another club and we will be hosting three Home Galas – Chadderton, Oldham Seals, Radcliffe and going to three Away Galas – Ashton, Bury and Ramsbottom.

BCM Junior League – ORCA Swimming Club

ORCA will appoint a Team Manager to run this league, the Team Manager will select his team from club members and he will invite swimmers to join the league.

If you are not selected – there are two other leagues to be announced soon.

Competition Judge Level 1 Course

If any parent / guardian or swimmer 15 years or over would like to support the club by becoming a Judge (there are the officials at the end of the pool at Galas) – ORCA are happy to support and pay for the training course.

This may be helpful for Swimmers that are taking GCSE PE – or parents that are interested in supporting the club in being able to start running our own Level 4 Galas

The course is a 1 day on-line course and covers the FINA rules for judging swimmers strokes whilst in competition.

Details of the course can be assessed here – the course is £20 – ORCA is happy to pay the course fees for a small number of people.

Please contact me at chairman@orcaswimming.club if you are interested.

Timekeepers Course

If anybody is interested in helping the club in running galas – Swim England run a Timekeepers Course which is a 1.5 Hour online course.

If you would like to take up the training and help poolside, please contact me at chairman@orcaswimming.club and we will gladly fund the course and help you book the training.

Alternatively you can book the training driectly Here

The kit has been changed due to the previous Joma clothing being no longer available from the manufacturer. ORCA want to keep the kit as affordable as possible whilst giving options for the swimmers to chose more than just T shirts and also allow personalisation of the kit at a low cost.

Details of the kit are available on the website, a catalogue can be downloaded here :

Swim England : The top 8 benefits of swimming

  1. Full body workout. Swimming uses all the muscles in the body so whether you swim a gentle breaststroke or hammer butterfly, you will get a full body workout. Plus, exercising in water makes your body work harder so 30 minutes in a pool is worth 45 minutes of the same activity on land.
  2. Great for general wellbeing. Just 30 minutes of swimming three times a week alongside a balanced, healthy diet and lifestyle is one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy and maintain a positive mental outlook. Do it with friends, and it’s even more fun!
  3. De-stresses and relaxes. Whether it’s work stressing you out, the kids being a nightmare, or just life in general, we all get times we just want to SCREAM. Well, help is at hand. Swimming regularly can lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve your sleep patterns. Feeling the mental benefits of swimming takes just a light swim. No lane pounding needed.
  4. Burns those calories. Swimming is one of the most effective ways to burn calories. A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in just half an hour, more than double that of walking. And a faster swim would see that chocolate bar gone quicker than if you went running or cycling.
  5. Lowers the risk of diseases. As well as being a great form of cardiovascular exercise, swimming just 30 minutes a week can help to guard against heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.
  6. Supports the body. Water supports up to 90 per cent of the body’s weight. So if you sprained an ankle at Monday night football or have a long term injury or illness, swimming is a brilliant way to stay active.
  7. Increases your energy levels. Inactivity and not ageing is often responsible for people’s lack of energy. Just 30 minutes of swimming three times per week can boost your energy levels through increased metabolic rate.
  8. Exercising without the sweat. If sweating puts you off other forms of exercise, fear not! As a swimmer, you’ll never feel sweaty no matter how hard you work because the water around you is constantly cooling you down.
